The Grove Encyclopedia of Decorative Arts

Thieme Becker
The German encyclopaedia of artist biographies in 37 volumes with the full title Allgemeines Lexikon der Bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. The joint work contains ca. 250 000 biographies that were compiled with the help of 400 specialists world-wide including all contemporary leading art historians.  The special relevance and strength of the Thieme-Becker-Vollmer lies in entries for less known and almost unknown artists not listed anywhere else; it lies also in the inclusion of architects, designers and other artisans working in applied art.

Oxford Dictionary of Art
This online edition was reviewed and selectively updated by the original author in 2011. The Oxford Dictionary of Art is the unrivalled one-volume guide to the art of the Western world. It provides a careful balance of fact and critical appraisal, ranging across painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts from classical times to the present.

Oxford Art Online

Social is a new kind of encyclopedia, delivering structured multimedia information about artists, musicians and authors (among others). Personalities are shown within their historical and cultural context, allowing the users to have the full picture encompassing the people life achievements, but also their post mortem influence.
